11 Years, 28 Hours, 198 Tracks: Neil Young Is ‘Goin’ Back’ on ‘Archives III’ (2024)

Good news for Rusties: Neil Young has officially announced the next installment of his Archives series. Vol. III (1976-1987) arrives on Sept. 6 via Reprise Records.

The massive anthology spans 11 years and picks up where 2020’s Archives II ended in 1976. This immensely productive period resulted in beloved albums like 1978’s Comes a Time and 1979’s Rust Never Sleeps, as well as genre-based records like 1983’s Trans and Everybody’s Rockin’ that puzzled fans at the time.

It includes an entire disc with Come a Time singers Linda Ronstadt and the late Nicolette Larson, while Larson is also featured on the disc Union Hall (1977). “It’s beautiful,” Young told us of the disc in 2021. “She sings so great. It may be the highlight of everything I’ve done with Nicolette.”

Archives III boasts 28 hours of 198 tracks over 22 discs. 121 of the songs are previously unreleased versions of live, studio, mixes, or edits, while 15 tracks — like the Annie Oakley tribute “Lady Wingshot,” or “Bright Sunny Danny,” below — have never been released in any capacity. Blu-Rays, 14 hours of film, a 176-page book, and poster is also included.

Separately, Young also announced Takes, a vinyl-only compilation containing 16 tracks — one from each of the CDs (there’s 17, so minus one). The double LP features 3 unreleased tracks and 12 unreleased versions of songs.

Young released the very first Archives in 2009, which spanned from 1963-1972. “Some of it is good, some of it is crap that wasn’t released — there’s a reason,” he said in his 2002 biography, Shakey. “That’s what a f*ckin’ archive is about, not ‘Here’s Neil Young in all his wonderfulness — the great, phenomenal f*cking wonderfulness.’ I want people to know how f*ckin’ terrible I was. How scared I was and how great I was. The real picture — that’s what I’m looking for. Not a product. And I think that’s what the die-hard fans want — the whole f*ckin’ thing.”

Archives Vol. III follows the archival release Early Daze, which documents the beginnings of Crazy Horse. Last week marked the 50th anniversary of On the Beach, which Rolling Stone paid tribute to in an essay.

Young recently announced a “big unplanned break” from his incredible Love Earth tour with Crazy Horse, but will be returning to the stage in Saratoga Springs, New York for Farm Aid 2024, where he serves on the board.
